European research, new recommendations for the management of intellectual assets and standardization

The European Commission has published two new Recommendations promoting good practices for the management of intellectual assets and standardization in the European Research Area. Both these aspects play a key role in increasing the impact of the results produced by the scientific community.

As pointed out by Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for innovation, research, culture, education and youth of the European Union, the two codes of practice “help to boost deployment of new technologies, so important to respond to the current societal challenges”.

The recommendations were developed together with a wide range of stakeholders, in particular, as described in the factsheets, through an inclusive co-creation process involving member states, universities, organizations and experts in the field.

The final documents provide guidance for researchers and innovators on how to manage, on the one hand, intellectual assets –defined as the results generated by any research and innovation activities – and, on the other hand, the processes for the identification of technical or quality specifications with which current or future products or services may comply.

In particular, the code of practice on intellectual assets replaces the previous one from 2008, while the recommendations on standardization rely on evidence-based data from more than 1,200 projects funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
